Many people in my life recently have been telling me about how someone made them feel upset. That the person was doing things that were confusing, aggravating, or annoying.
In listening to these countless stories, I had one thought that kept circulating in my head.
“Why are you letting them bother you?”
Throughout life, there are going to be countless times where someone is going to bring out a negative emotion or reaction. But it’s important to understand something.
You don’t have to give that person the power to ruin your mood. You have the ability to choose not be affected.
Just because there’s someone tailgating you or going ten under the speed limit in front of you, does not mean you have to let it get to you. They’re going where they’re going, and so are you. Getting angry and yelling are not going to change anything but your mood.
Just because someone is constantly coming to you with drama doesn’t mean you have to let it consume you. Listen, but draw the line at taking it to heart.
And just because someone lashes out at you first, does not mean you have to retaliate. It’s not worth your time or your happiness.
And I’ll say it again: letting something negative get to you is not worth your time or happiness.
When you’re faced with an unpleasant situation, remember to take it slow. Stay calm. Take deep breaths. Analyze the situation, and see if there is a solution. If there is, proceed calm and rationally. If not, I can almost guarantee it’s going to be perfectly okay if you wait it out. Just let it happen, and tell yourself that you’re not going to let it change your mood.
Don’t give people the power to steal your sunshine. The only one who should be in control of your happiness is you.
